Celebrating Dementia Action Week at Erddig: A Community Coming Together

As the gardens at National Trust Erddig bloom into life this May, a different kind of growth is taking place — one of awareness, inclusion, and community spirit.

We are proud to be taking part in Dementia Action Week (20th – 26th May 2025) – creating awareness of dementia and turning that understanding into action.  Hosted at Erdigg NT/YG we are opening our arms out to the wider community and encouraging people to come together in support of those living with dementia, and to celebrate their achievements.

A Safe and Supportive Setting at Erddig

Erddig has long been a place where stories are cherished — of families, workers, and lives well lived. This week, we’re proud to be able to add a new chapter: one of resilience, care, and community connection. Visitors are invited to enjoy dementia-friendly walks through the gardens, wellbeing activities, and enjoy calm spaces for rest and reflection.

Volunteers and staff at Erddig have received dementia awareness training, ensuring that all visitors will feel welcomed and supported, and showing that they are a safe and inclusive space for all to make memories.

A Partnership Rooted in Care

At the heart of this week’s events is a powerful partnership of local organisations that brings together the strengths of those who are working to make Wrexham a dementia-friendly community:

  • Dementia Friendly Wrexham are a group of volunteers who have made it their aim to make Wrexham a place where people with dementia can live as independently as possible, supported by a compassionate and informed community.
  • North Wales Fire and Rescue Service provide essential guidance around home safety — offering fire safety checks and practical tips tailored for those living with dementia and their families.
  • Alzheimer’s Society Memory Support Pathway  provide support, at the right time, to anyone living in North Wales who is affected by dementia or is worried about their memory, living with dementia at home or in hospital, or is an unpaid carer, relative or friend.
  • Home Instead Wrexham & Flintshire brings its person-centred approach to care, offering information on in-home support services, along with friendly faces ready to chat and advise.
  • Inclusive Arts and Memories, are two local support groups, made up of individuals and carers, offering a range of creative activities and celebrating the amazing achievements of those who are affected by dementia.

Moments that Matter

Wellbeing sessions, art classes and memory walks, every activity is designed with joy, dignity, and engagement in mind.

We know that small changes make a big difference. Whether it’s a conversation about dementia, a well-placed signpost, or a simple show of kindness to a person living with dementia, every act of awareness helps break down stigma and will build a community where everyone belongs.

We warmly invite you to be a part of Dementia Action Week at Erddig — whether you’re living with dementia, caring for someone who is, or simply want to be a more supportive member of your local community.

Together, we can make Wrexham a warm, welcoming place for those affected by dementia.
